There is no doubt that the coryphaeus among Kiev theaters is National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet named after Taras Shevchenko. Kiev Theatre of Opera is in downtown and stares passerby in the face from afar. Theater building stands on an eminence; there is a small square in front of the theatre, allowing to take a detached view of attracting theater architecture. National Theater of Opera in Kiev offers rich repertoire, consisting of compositions of world and Ukrainian classics of different epoch music. Festive mood appears already at foyer of Kiev Theater of Opera – fine interior furnish, spacious vestibules, great number of mirrors and candles create a special theatre atmosphere. Outstanding masters of vocal and choreography, well-known musicians work here.

Among other Kiev theatres, two more are widely known: National Academic Drama Theatre named after I.Franko and National Academic Theatre of Russian Drama named after Lesya Ukrainka. Performances of these theatres are a great success for many years.

One more Kiev theatre that, in spite of name, will be interesting for adults too, is Kiev Marionette Theatre. As well as Kiev Theater of Opera, Marionette Theatre will be interesting even for usual seeing. Its building is constructed like a magic castle, here and there, in niches, at the ground in front of entrance and downstairs, there are skillfully made sculptures of fairy characters. Kiev Marionette Theatre has plays for all spectators: from youngest to oldest. Many years marionette performances are played here: Decameron, Divine comedy, Dock worker and King.

Music-lovers should pay attention to National Philharmonic of Ukraine. In Hall of Columns named after Lysenko, famous for its excellent acoustics, concerts of Ukrainian and world music stars and choir performances are given regularly.

Kiev also has Theatre of Operetta – the most easy and pleasant musical genre which hardly can be called boring. Kiev Academic Theatre of Operetta is located in the building, where Troizky People’s house was situated, and already then concerts and vaudevilles were played there.

Kiev theatres are so various that can satisfy both curious interest, and exacting taste of theatre art connoisseurs. Theatre ticket office can be found practically in every city district, they are located in metro stations and large shopping centers.
