The beginning National Philharmonic Society of Ukraine was marked in distant 1863, when Kiev branch of Imperial Russian Music Society was founded. Already in the beginning of 19 century Kiev music life was very lively. Kiev Contract fairs were visited by such outstanding authors and performers like Ferenz List, brothers Vesnyavsky and other musicians known at that time.

Economical upturn, which was noticed those years in Ukraine, favored men of means to support art willingly and take an active part in cultural life of the city, in creative sphere prosperity. In 1881 Council of Elders of Kiev Merchants Assembly obtains the building permits for placing of their club from Kiev Town Council. Two-storeyed stone house was erected just for one building season. Kiev city and diocesan architect Vladimir Nikolaev was the author of the project; he also exercised control of the building. Being a capable competent architect, Nikolaev also had musical talent. Knowing acoustic laws, Nikolaev was capable to construct a hall which enraptured actors and audience with sound quality and strength. House of Merchants Assembly quickly gained fame and popularity in Kiev. It became a favorite place of holding of various masquerades, charitable lotteries, family celebrations, literary and musicales evenings.

Among known names, connected with National Philharmonic Society fortune, there is the name of Alexander Mihaylovich Vinogradsky – an outstanding and original conductor. Major contribution to Kiev Philharmonic Society history was made by Nikolay Vitalevich Lysenko –composer and performer of genius, founder of professional Ukrainian music, active public figure and educator.

Despite stormy beginning of 20 century, Kiev Philharmonic Society continued operating. During this period works of Musorgsky, Debussy, Sen-Sans were played. Rakhmaninov, Skryabin, Sobinov, Shalyapin, Nezhdanova and many other known performers were on tour.

In 1919 Merchant Assembly ceased to exist. Soviet rule did not take a liking to anticommunist Merchant Assembly and forbade this establishment. Proletarian House of Arts and later Political Education House were placed there. But peripeteias didn’t end. For another time the former building of Merchant Assembly turned into club "Bolshevik" and in 30th years into Palace of Pioneers.

Since 1927 National Philharmonic Society of Ukraine carried out its activity in Kharkov – capital of Ukraine, and in 1934 returned to Kiev that was restored capital status. At this time Philharmonic Society did not have its own premise. Performances went off in different halls, recreation centers, working clubs. In 1937 National Symphonic Orchestra under the direction of Natan Grigorevich Rahlin appeared under National Philharmonic Society of Ukraine.

Since the war beginning National Philharmonic Society of Ukraine suspended work. During fascist occupation German officer club located in House of former Merchant Assembly. This building – one of few, that survived near destroyed Kreschatik.

After war, during the work on general plan of Kreschatik restoration, it was decided to demolish the building of former Merchant Assembly despite of its historical value, the house was in an emergency condition. Nevertheless, the building avoided a sad fate. In dilapidated Kiev there was no better building with such acoustics that is necessary for Philharmonic Society. In 1944 the Philharmonic Society stated working.

Hall of Columns of Philharmonic Society received a lot of real music stars. At different times Glazunov, Oystrah, Rakhmaninov, Lemeshev, Rostropovich, Rubinshteyn, Ruffo, Shalyapin, Lysenko, Revutsky gave a concert here. Well-known Ukrainian choir of G.Verevka, Choir of bandura players of Ukraine appeared on its stage, String quartet named after Lysenko and Kiev Chamber Orchestra started out here.

In honour of the 120 anniversary birth and 50 anniversary of N.Lysenko's death, Hall of Columns of Kiev Philharmonic Society was named after him. In honor of the 100 anniversary of building of House of Merchant Assembly it was given the status of architecture monument, protected by the state.

In 80th years several serious accidents considerably worsened the building condition. During one of the accident basements were flooded and archive and rich music library was lost. Owing to persistence of Philharmonic Society director D.Ostapenko, restoration and reconstruction work began. Builders had to save monument’s historical appearance and acoustic quality of Hall of Columns named after Lysenko. Also it was necessary to renew an equipment: stage director's panel, sound recording equipment, illumination and stage mechanisms and other. Renewed Kiev Philharmonic Society was opened in 1996.

In 1994 for long-term fruitful creative work and major contribution to development of Ukrainian musical art, under the Decree of Ukraine President Kiev Philharmonic Society gained the status of National.
