Kiev academical puppet show theatre is one of two Marionette theatres operating in Kiev. In October, 1927 at Kiev Children's Theatre named after I.Franko (Theatre of Young Spectator in Lipki), the first Puppet show theatre of Ukraine was opened. Initiators of Puppet show theatre creation were I.S.Deyeva and People’s Artist of Ukraine O.I.Solomarsky. In 1937 at 1st All-USSR Marionette Theaters festival, Jewish branch of Kiev puppet show theatre took first place. The first post-war performance of Kiev puppet show theatre took place in 1946. At that time the theatre located at number 7 Yaroslavov val street. Theater was headed by M.I.Tobilevich, daughter of I.K.Karpenko-Karog, an outstanding Ukrainian writer and dramatist. Gradually Puppet show theatre repertoire was enriched with adult plays: " Divine comedy" of I.Shtok by work of Dante, "Devil's mill" of Y.Dordi and I.Shtok. Since 1991 on Kiev puppet show theatre initiative international festivals of marionette theatres began to be carried out in Ukraine capital, marionette theatres from Belgium, Austria, Canada, Slovakia, Finland, Japan, China, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Russia, Bulgaria, Moldova, Buryatia, Turkey and other countries took part there. By professionals’ estimations, festival in Kiev is the most prestigious in Europe. In 1995 for the weighty contribution to aesthetic education of the rising generation and also for the public activity intended for consolidation of international creative relations Kiev academical puppet show theatre was awarded with International Prize "Friendship". Kiev Marionette Theatre is a member of International Marionette Theater Workers association "UNIMA". Theater achieved its academic status on October, 30th, 2002 and since then it is named Kiev Academic State Marionette Theatre. There is a studio of puppeteers training operating under Kiev puppet show theatre, and special courses "the actor with a marionette at stage" and "the actor of marionette theatre", where actors for country marionette theatres are trained, - under Kiev college of variety-circus art. During its existence, Theatre changed several premises, moving from one address to another. Finally, in 2005 a fantastic castle has grown in Kreshchaty park – new and permanent house of Kiev Academic State Marionette Theatre. Architect Vitaly Yudin is the designer of the building. Theatre has two auditoriums (for 300 and 110 persons), children's cafe and museum of antique dolls, where the collection of marionettes from different countries is collected. It should be noted that the majority of puppet-actors, which take part in the theatre performances, work there since the very first days of its creation and can be considered antique too. Certainly, sometimes some of them should be restored, new characters are included, but the majority of puppets serve spectators more than 80 years. On a hillock, opened to view, the fantastic lock with turrets and spires rises. Amazing fountain works at the square in front of the theater: in its centre a huge flower spreads its petals and a tiny girl sits inside - Thumbelina.
On November, 11th, 2006 new fantastic characters appeared round Puppet show theatre. Small Thumbelina, sitting in the flower, acquired friends. Pinocchio, joyfully swinging a gold key, stands at the terrace of first floor. Figures of sad Pierrot and Malvina with a poodle Artemon are placed in niches. Lower is organ-grinder Karlo with his old barrel organ. Children and adults like to be photographed with his hat. At one of platforms in front of Kiev Academic State Theatre, Ukrainian fairy-tale hero Kotigoroshko completes his fight with Dragon. Today Theatre repertoire contains such performances as: Decameron, Wood song, Dock worker and the King, Divine comedy, Masha and the bear, Secret of Queen of roads, Gentleman Kotsky, Puss in Boots, Cinderella, Thumbelina, Ugly duckling and others.
