History of National Academic theatre named after Ivan Franko began in Vinnitsa in 1920. A small troupe, headed by Ukrainian actor Ignat Petrovich Jura, worked very enthusiastically. During the first season actors of theatre presented to spectators 23 performances – the great number. Theatrical critics, noting new theater’s popularity with public, named it "Theatre of the new century". A that time the troupe was formed by many young actors, who later became legendary. And Ignat Petrovich Jura remained an unchallenged art director of Drama Theatre of Ivan Franko throughout 46 years. At that time, in Ukraine territory there were several interesting and original theatres, competing with each other in creative work. The closest creative relations tied the troupes of Theater named after I. Franko and Theatre Berezil, headed by Les Kurbas. In 1926, by order of the authorities, Theatre of Ivan Franko moved from capital Kharkov to Kiev, and Theatre Berezil’ to Kharkov on the contrary. But Theater’s actors and art director were not very upset about it and began studying enthusiastically Kiev public testes. Gogol’s Viy author's interpretation of Ostap Vishnia was chosen for the opening night. Present building of National Academic Drama Theatre of Ivan Franko was built on-site of the pond drained in the end of 20 century. Once this district was considered not suitable for building. But there is well-known House with Chimeras of V.Gorodetsky above the theater. Nevertheless, in 1898 two-storeyed building arose here, and in October Theatre of Solovtsov, which was the basis for Theatre of Russian Drama named after Lesya Ukrainka, was located here till 1926. In 30th years of 20 century Drama Theatre of Ivan Franko went through the real growth. New performances appeared in the theater repertoire: Don Carlos of Schiller, Boris Godunov of Pushkin. Plays of Ukrainian playwrights such, as P.Krechet and O.Korniychuk, were not disregarded also. Theatre was awarded an academic status in 1940. During Great Patriotic War the theatre of Ivan Franko didn’t stop working. The theater troupe was evacuated and gave performances in Semipalatinsk and Tashkent, toured across the USSR, and not only on the home front. Two front-line brigades of theater actors gave performances for fighters on the front line. Theater was authorized to have building in Kiev during the war, in 1946 the building was restored and theatre returned to Kiev and continued working. In 1959-1960 the theatre building was reconstructed and became three-stored. A little public garden was laid out near the theater, there townspeople and Kiev visitors may have a rest before performance or during a walk. In the public garden centre there is a cast-iron fountain with a bowl, which was placed in 1900. Some actors of the theatre were successful in the cinema. Particularly, the film Rainbow, shot by Mark Donsky in 1943, became the first Soviet feature film, awarded to Oscar. The leading part of the film was played by the actress of Drama Theatre of I. Franko Natalia Uzhvy. This film made US president Roosevelt crying and inspired director Roberto Rosselini for creation of the film "Rome – an open city".
By decree of Ukraine president from October, 11th, 1994 the theatre was awarded the status of National according to his deserts. National Drama Theatre of Ivan Franko tries to combine modern European Dramatic art trends with traditional Ukrainian experience. Theatre’s repertoire is very rich. At different times the following performances were played in the theater: Gogol’s The Inspector General and Bizet’ Carmen, Beaumarchais’ The Marriage of Figaro and Gashek’s Adventures of good soldier Shveik, Karpenko-Karogo’s Vanity and Schiller’s Don Carlo, Pushkin‘s Boris Godunov, and Franko’s Stolen happiness, Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita and Staritsky For two hares. Also spectators may see performances under plays of Chekhov, Shaw, Shakespeare, Rybchinsky, Sholom Aleyhem, Sofokl and many other classics of dramatic art and literature. In the end of 2001an outstanding actor, colleague of S.Danchenko, People’s artist of Ukraine, Bogdan Stupka became the art director of Theatre named after Ivan Franko. Near to the theatre there is a monument to Ivan Franko. In a public garden opposite to the theatre building there is one more monument to Ukrainian actor Nikolay Jakovchenko, an original composition named the Monument to a Man with a Dog. Legends and myths:It’s known that fountain bowl on Ivan Franko square was decorated with the town governor’s head copies instead of lion heads. Thereby foundry workers tried to do a bad turn to the hated mayor.
