Less than an hour journey from Kiev, there is the architectural-landscape complex Pirogovo, Museum of Folk architecture and Rural Life, stretched over 150-hectares area. In 1969 in Pirogovo’s territory on the outskirts of Kiev, it was decided to found a museum complex, and in 1976 the museum started working. In the middle of woody hills under the open sky more than 300 exhibits, brought from all over Ukraine, were disposed. The museum space in Pirogovo is organized according to a territorially-time principle. Walking there, visitors of the complex can see, how our ancestors lived in Zakarpat’e, Poltavshchina and Slobozhanshchina, Podol, Polesye, or in South Ukraine starting from 16 century. Models of various ethnographic cultures of Ukraine are collected here. Old huts, wooden mills and churches, brought from all over Ukraine, were carefully restored. Each small house in Pirogovo is a museum where conditions and atmosphere of Ukrainian villagers’ way of life is reproduced. Creating an exposition, historians tried to adhere to documentary evidences. Large territory is occupied with fields, as it was in Ukraine from time immemorial. At the end of summer and in autumn they shine golden because of ears of wheat and old wooden mills rise above them. It is very nice in Pirogovo in spring, in May, when apple-trees and cherries are in blossom. At that time it seems that all these court yards are inhabited, a countrywoman is just about to appear and shouting children run out.
Features of the territory, where the museum is located, made it possible to recreate settlements of steppe South Ukraine and Carpathians with large authenticity. For example, the exhibits representing Carpathians are located on steep hills among conifers, and houses and estates are far away from each other as well as in the real Carpathian villages in the past. If you have already walked round other corners of Pirogovo before getting to museum Carpathians, you will note that the houses here are constructed of good wood and are notable for large sizes as opposed to other districts of Ukraine. It is difficult to go round all museum Pirogovo for one day as the territory is too great, but it is quite possible if you wish. During a travel through mini-Ukraine difference in living condition and features of housekeeping become noticeable.
In Museum of Rural life in Pirogovo not only centuries-old exhibits are collected. Here there are settlements of the middle of 20 century. Conditions in houses will remind adult people their childhood. TV set “Berezka” on long thin legs, old refrigerators, furniture, textiles are not at all ancient but already forgotten things. Pure air and beautiful landscape make Pirogovo a good place for rest in winter and summer. In museum territory the small restaurants designed in folk style are opened, there one can indulge himself with dishes of traditional cuisine prepared simply tasty. In unique wooden churches operating at the territory of Pirogovo, it is possible even to get married. In Pirogovo fairs are often conducted, gathering fans of folklore and simply merry healthy rest. There one can have much fun and also buy hand-made clothes, mats, embroidered pillows, towels and shirts, pottery, hand-mane leather bags, and author's linen footwear and so on. It’s a good chance for tourists to buy souvenirs and gifts. All products may be bought in Kiev too, at Andreevsky spusk for example, but the prices will much higher. Daredevils may try to make a souvenir in memory at potter's wheel or try good luck in another craft. Here people may listen and even dance to the clean ringing melody of “sopilka”, hear kobza or bandura.
