Museum of history of Ukraine

National Museum of History of Ukraine was originally an archaeological exposition in City Museum of Antiques (now National Art Museum). In 1904 the exposition officially gained a museum status. At first the museum existed owing to sponsors’ support, and in 1909 it was passed to the state care. In Museum collection of that time there were objects, found during excavations, that belonged to museum founders and known archeologists of those years.

During its existence, National Museum of History of Ukraine collection changed location several times. In 1935 Museum was transferred to the territory of Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra. At that time Lavra was transformed to museum area. During Great Patriotic War Museum was evacuated to Ufa, and after returning, its exhibits were exposed in the former art school building on Old Kiev Mountain, where the museum stays to this day.

Museum of history of Ukraine

In National Museum of History of Ukraine one can retrace the main marks of society development in territory of Ukrainian state, starting from deep antiquity till modern times. Material evidences of Tripol culture (in VI-III thousand BC), Polovtsian military armour, exhibits of Kievan Russia period, late materials of Soviet Union time, and little exposition covering the events of Orange revolution (2004).

In National Museum of History of Ukraine halls visitors can familiarize theirself with rare archaeological, ethnographical and numismatic collections. Ancient printed books, picturesque canvas and sculptures are stored here. Not far from the building of National Museum of History of Ukraine there is a unique history monument - foundation remains of Assumption of Virgin Mary Church (Tithe) which was the first stone church in Russia. The Tithe church was built in 986-996. Prince Vladimir the Great allocated 1/10 of his income for the church building – hence the church name comes from.

Museum of history of Ukraine

National Museum of History of Ukraine is one of the most attended in Kiev. More than 15 expositions work here. The collection of the objects, concerning Serge Lifar – an outstanding Ukrainian dancer, who was called Dance God and was equaled to Nezhinsky talent, is especially popular.
